MassDEP Releases 2023 Report Card
on State’s C&D Facilities

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection recently presented its 2023 Facility Annual Report Data Analysis at its quarterly C&D Subcommittee meeting. Currently 29 facilities are permitted to receive C&D waste in Massachusetts, including 18 processing facilities and 11 transfer stations. In 2023, these facilities received over 1.8 million tons of C&D waste.

Funding Available: Clean Heavy-Duty
Vehicles Grants

The U.S. EPA is accepting applications by July 25th to the 2024 Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program to fund the replacement of non-zero-emission heavy-duty trucks and buses with zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. To advance environmental justice, this program is seeking to prioritize projects that take place in communities overburdened by air pollution. Additionally, the EPA will evaluate applications on their benefits towards disadvantaged communities experiencing poor air quality along with the quality and extent of community engagement efforts.

 Committee Corner

Our Committees are where all of the lifting occurs! Check out highlights from their discussions at our most recent meetings. CDRA members are encouraged to attend committee meetings to get the most out of their memberships.

Gypsum Recycling Committee
During our most recent meeting on June 12th, Chair Terry Weaver and the committee reviewed current and future plans. The Board recently approved a vendor for the Life Cycle Analysis Project, the work for which is expected to begin soon. Pledges to support the program are still encouraged. The committee is also planning a future gypsum recycling track, which is expected to be offered in Dallas as part of C&D World 2025. A gypsum recycling online library will be developed for future website work. Read more.

Shingle Recycling Committee
During the meeting on June 11th, Chair Dan Horton reminded the group of the work being done to improve and modernize shinglerecycling.org, the partnership with NAPA to produce a Recycled Asphalt Shingle Life Cycle Analysis document that addresses <3/8” material, a RAS study being conducted by the University of New Hampshire, the ongoing work to complete a contractor recycling guidelines publication, and preparations for the 10th Shingle Recycling Forum, to be held in Louisville, KY on October 30th. More information on this conference can be found later in this newsletter. Read more.

Legislative Committee
Thanks to Vice Chair Andrea Johnson for taking us through our latest meeting on June 6th! During this meeting, Andrea reiterated the importance of being aware of legislation that can negatively or positively impact operations and understanding your role in engaging with legislators. Executive Director Terri Ward then updated the group on the LEED version 5 comment period and the work of CDRA members involved in the task force, which examined the 92-page proposed guideline more closely. Comments were filed with the U.S. Green Building Council in time to meet the deadline! Read more.

Safety & Risk Management Committee
During our most recent meeting on June 4th, we kicked off the 2024 Safety Awards planning period. The awards themselves will be presented at C&D World 2025 in Dallas. The CDRA developed the Best Practices in Safety Awards program to recognize companies that have achieved a high level of safety management and identify a level of performance that all C&D operators should strive to achieve. We are open to feedback and welcome new safety criteria that are in keeping with industry activities, keeping in mind that not all C&D recyclers are the same (for example, some own facilities and those that do not). Our goal is to increase participation this year and look for other opportunities to share the program's true value. Read more.

Membership & Marketing Committee – Virtual Member Round Table
To continually evolve and provide additional networking events to our membership, we hosted our second quarter Virtual Member Round Table Event on June 24th. This was the second time we've held this event, and we were pleased to see the number of attendees represented by new and existing members. The informal meeting was a big success, as it provided the perfect opportunity for our members to network with one another and for the CDRA board and staff to hear directly from members. The round table began with an overview of the CDRA, staff, chairs, and committees, followed by a casual round table introduction of new and existing members. There was a lot of excitement around the discussion regarding developing an aggregate committee. Attendees were provided with a brief overview of the member exclusive benefits they receive as a CDRA member, including the powerful online tools available to them. Even if you have been an existing CDRA member for some time, please consider joining us at our following virtual round table in the third quarter, watch for details.
