Shingle Recycling CommitteeDuring the meeting on June 11th, Chair Dan Horton reminded the group of the work being done to improve and modernize shinglerecycling.org, the partnership with NAPA to produce a Recycled Asphalt Shingle Life Cycle Analysis document that addresses <3/8” material, a RAS study being conducted by the University of New Hampshire, the ongoing work to complete a contractor recycling guidelines publication, and preparations for the 10th Shingle Recycling Forum, to be held in Louisville, KY on October 30th. More information on this conference can be found later in this newsletter. Dan also offered his analysis of the data contained in the NAPA Asphalt Pavement Survey on Recycled Materials and Warm-Mix Asphalt Usage 2009-2022, which clearly showed a recent resurgence in the use of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), with usage of 673,000 tons in FY2022. There are only five states where Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) are completely prohibited for all sectors (AK, HI, LA, ND, and WY). So, there are still growth opportunities, and HMA plant purchasing trends have remained consistent. A total of 16.7 million tons of RAS have been used in roads since 2009, and in recent years, RAS has been used in Warm or Hot Mix, Cold Mix, and in aggregates, though HMA was the only reported use in 2022. However, inventories of unused material are rising, and the amount of post-consumer waste generated in 2022 has been approaching near-record levels since 2000. Attendees were interested in finding new outlets for HMA, WMA, and aggregates. The resulting cost savings from the use of this material appeal to the paving industry. The group explored the benefits of recycling businesses, the necessary capital expenditures, and ways to address the typical barriers to widespread adoption. Dan, Membership, and CDRA Marketing Manager Heather Schuler then offered a closer look at the redevelopment of shinglerecycling.org. They are recruiting committee members interested in assisting with this effort, and member employees are encouraged to reach out to Heather if interested (schuler@cdrecycling...). More details related to the timeline and scope of work were shared. We appreciate GAF’s and CertainTeed’s support for the project! A resource for roofing contractors, currently titled a Supplier’s Training & Requirements for Asphalt Shingle Recycling document (attached), is in its final stage of edits. Dan offered to share it with all attendees to get their final thoughts. Please join us for our next meeting on August 13th at 4:00 Eastern! |
