Board Member Andrea Johnson Reflects on Industry Visits

Andrea Johnson, CDRA Board Member and Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee, recently shared her experiences on LinkedIn that highlight the invaluable benefits of CDRA membership. Over the course of an eventful week, Andrea welcomed visits from key industry leaders, each offering insights that have already begun to impact her operations.

Reflecting on a visit from Terry Weaver and his colleague Mike from USA Gypsum, Andrea shared, "One of the many things I truly love about being a CDRA member is the access to industry specialists that I can learn from. It is hard to describe how dedicated this organization is to truly helping members serve their communities better and improve their operations." Terry’s expertise in gypsum recycling proved invaluable during their tour of Andrea’s facility, and she noted that his suggestions have already led to actionable improvements: "We have already started implementing his suggestions and are excited to grow in this area."

 Committee Corner

Our Committees are where all of the lifting occurs! Check out highlights from their discussions at our most recent meetings. CDRA members are encouraged to attend committee meetings to get the most out of their memberships.

Gypsum Recycling Committee

During our most recent meeting, Chair Terry Weaver welcomed new members and shared the latest updates with the committee. Also, plans for an online gypsum recycling library and a series of gypsum recycling sessions for the Dallas edition of C&D World 2025 were mentioned. Mark your calendars for March 12-14! Other projects for later in 2025 and beyond were also mentioned. And Terry shared information on a new $100,000,000 EPA Buy Clean Initiative that may result in future grant opportunities. Committee members Susan Hines, Mark Englert and several others then discussed EPA Product Category Rules (PCR’s), and how they can determine how work related to a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) might be performed. Shingle Recycling Committee

During our Shingle Recycling Committee meeting on August 13th, our attendees were updated on the purposes and current activities of the committee, which includes the delivery of useful research such as a RAS life cycle analysis, the sharing and development of educational and benchmarking resources such as the 10th Shingle Recycling Forum and a Contractor Recycling Guidelines publication, and the growth of C&D recycling nationally. Chaired by Dan Horton of ASR Systems, the group regularly discusses the promotion of shingle recycling and the use of recycled asphalt shingles. Read more.

Legislative and Regulatory Committee

Thanks to those who attended our Legislative Committee virtual meeting on August 1st. Access to committee meetings is an exclusive benefit for CDRA member company employees, and all are invited to participate. The main focus of the meeting was how to best interact with state and local government officials to influence regulations and legislation that will increase construction material recycling. Andrea Johnson of van der Linde Recycling and Richard Ludt of IRS Demo shared their experiences in approaching and working with these officials. The work starts with educating them about the industry and explaining why recycling is essential. It continues with discussions on pressing current issues while offering input on matters of particular importance to C&D recyclers. Read more.

Safety & Risk Management Committee

We are pleased to announce that Leroy Taggart of Marsh McLennan Agency will take on the role of Chair of the Safety & Risk Management Committee! In addition, Kelsey Thomas of Mount Materials will continue as Vice Chair and will lead the annual Safety Awards program. Look for more information on this year’s application process, coming soon. Thanks to Leroy and Kelsey for their leadership!

Important OSHA Update on Proposed Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Standard. From our Friends at Construction Industry Safety Coalition (CISC): OSHA’s proposed heat injury and illness prevention standard will be published August 30 in the Federal Register. With a 120-day comment period, the deadline to submit feedback will be Monday, December 30. According to an OSHA staffer, there will also be a “robust public hearing, with a post-hearing comment period, and likely a period for post-hearing legal briefs” after the comment period, so your individual organizations, as well as CISC, will have multiple opportunities to provide feedback to the agency. More information on the proposed rule, including a summary fact sheet and recorded OSHA presentation on the standard, is on the agency’s website.
