End Markets Committee Embraces Operations

CDRA’s popular End Markets Committee has recently been rebadged as the End Markets & Operations Committee.

With a commitment to fostering industry growth, the committee is expanding its efforts to help members optimize operations and explore new market opportunities. Chair Will Hancock recognized the need to offer members practical advice beyond end markets, which are already receiving specific attention through the well-developed gypsum, shingle, and aggregates recycling committees.

Building on the popularity of his “Recycler’s Anonymous” at the end of every meeting, and C&D World’s Technology Forum, Will and Vice Chair Lincoln Young will incorporate discussions on emerging technologies and best management practices to improve recycling efficiency and recovery.

The CDRA community is all about sharing experiences and collaborating to solve problems. If you haven’t joined an End Markets (and Operations) Committee meeting recently, we encourage you to participate in the next one. Come prepared to share your biggest challenges and opportunities while welcoming input from your peers.

Together, we can build a stronger industry. This year’s event gathered professionals from across the globe to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and solutions to challenges in C&D recycling. Exceeding 500 attendees and 55 exhibitors, the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as leaders in the field shared insights and forged valuable connections.

LEED V5 Ratified by Members

LEED v5 was ratified by USGBC members earlier this month, following a multi-year development process. The final vote took place after public comment periods and refinements to the rating system. CDRA leaders and members were instrumental in retaining biofuels as diversion, which was expressly excluded in earlier versions. Another ‘win’ for C&D recyclers is the stricter accountability measures included to help reduce fraud in recycling rate reporting. The updated framework emphasizes greater transparency, third-party verification, and improved tracking requirements.

End Markets & Operations Committee
During our newly reinvented End Markets & Operations Committee, Chair Will Hancock invited members to share their challenges with Alternate Daily Cover (ADC) in the marketplace. The idea for this discussion came from member feedback that more states are considering ADC equivalent to garbage, rather than a beneficial use product. The group discussed the technology used to produce various types of ADC, the important differences between utilizing MRF screenings as a byproduct versus grinding C&D to ‘manufacture’ ADC. Ideas for modifications to the product to better suit specific areas and opportunities to better educate all industry stakeholders on the benefits of ADC and C&D fines were discussed. Shingle Recycling Committee
Our recent committee meeting focused on the different end uses and processing techniques for recycled asphalt shingles, and also offered the opportunity for members to share their thoughts on what the future priorities of the committee should be. Potential future projects were shared, including an annual update of an existing C&D Report on state requirements for RAS, a Best Practices document for the management and processing of recycled asphalt shingles, and the development of an official opinion on how best to deal with asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral once widely used in building materials that has since raised health concerns in recent decades.
