CDRA Fall Board Meeting a Success
by Executive Director/CEO, Terri Ward. "Thank you to the dozens of members, board members, and committee chairs for attending our fall board meeting in Portland, Oregon. Besides being my home state, it’s fitting that Oregon boasts the nation’s first bottle bill (1971) and the highest recycling rates in the country. It was a great backdrop to build on this year’s momentum. We’ve made significant accomplishments so far, including the record-setting C&D World, influenced LEEDv5, conducted important LCA work, highly attended committee meetings, increased industry recognition, and membership growth. For those of you that could not attend, please read on for a recap of our meetings."

Safety Awards Opening Soon
Each year, we invite our members to apply for a Best Practices in Safety Award. Taking this step is symbolic of your company’s commitment to safety, for employees and others that work in and around your company facilities. Rather than ranking the performance of your company when compared to others, member companies compete against their own policies, learn from current practices, and identify areas for continuous improvement from one year to the next.
In 2024, we were pleased to announce a record number of participants! We also added a special longtime recognition award that celebrates those companies participating in the program and receiving recognition for at least five and as long as ten years. We invite you to enroll this fall as we continue our efforts to build and foster a safety-focused culture.
Look for a direct link to the application form, coming soon! Also keep in mind that there is no fee to apply. Email us with any questions.

Committee Corner
Our Committees are where all of the lifting occurs! Check out highlights from their discussions at our most recent meetings. CDRA members are encouraged to attend committee meetings to get the most out of their memberships. End Markets Committee
During our most recent meeting on September 16th, Chair Will Hancock welcomed new committee members and then welcomed our guest speakers. Todd Byrum with Butler Paper shared information on some of the uncommon materials that we see in our waste streams that recyclers might be overlooking that could be revenue builders for those with ample space in their facilities. One example is cardboard. Todd examined the different grades of cardboard, cardboard supply chain challenges, the potential for a longshoreman’s strike on the Eastern seaboard, best practices in processing, changes in product quality, fluctuating transportation costs and varying demand for the product. C&D plastics is another source of potential revenue. Todd offered some details related to how clean the product needs to be before it is ready for transfer to a new customer. Source separation of vinyl siding and/or fencing can be another opportunity, though the value per load is relatively low currently due to the easy availability of product. Read more.
Gypsum Recycling Committee During our most recent meeting on the 11th of September, Chair Terry Weaver welcomed new members and shared the latest updates with the committee, including the status of our funding drive for the ongoing Lifecycle Analysis project. Thanks to all members who have already contributed!
The data is expected to reinforce our position that the collection and recycling of gypsum represents a far better outcome than depositing this product in a landfill. Related to this, Malak Anshassi and Nicole Robey shared the latest findings from Innovative Technical Solutions (ITS), the vendor contracted to complete the LCA project work. Though findings are still preliminary, ITS expects to be able to complete the first phase of the work in the next several months. Read more.
Safety & Risk Management CommitteeDuring our meeting on September 17th, Chair Kelsey Thomas offered an update on the Best Practices in Safety Awards program (see the earlier article in this newsletter) and noted that the application should be ready for distribution to the membership very soon. The committee is planning to share testimonials from recent awards program participants. One member noted the recent improvements in their program as a result of examining their safety training and processes through the Safety Awards Program! Read more.
