CDRA Submits Comments on LEEDv5 Recycling Credits
For nearly 15 years, CDRA has been working with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) on improving the LEED credits related to construction waste management, recycling, and reuse. Our goals have been to ensure that credits stayed grounded in reality, help push the construction material recycling market forward, and ensure they effectively promote sustainable practices.
After a long delay, the USGBC recently unveiled LEEDv5, the fifth complete version of the extensive rating program for green building. Unfortunately, this version left almost intact the issues previous versions of LEED had, including the ease with which false recycling rates could be claimed and undeserved points awarded for recycling and reusing little or nothing.
Fortunately, USGBC allowed comments on this iteration of LEED before implementation. CDRA formed a small member group that worked diligently over a two-week period to reach consensus on this important program, and comments were submitted May 24, which was the deadline for doing so.

Change of Plans & Save the Date! October 30, 2024, Louisville, KY
CDRA’s 10th Shingle Recycling Forum, the premier event for shingle recycling, will move to Louisville, KY, for the first time on October 30, 2024. The time is right, as interest in the recycling of roofing materials is growing because of circularity demands, higher oil prices, and government initiatives. This event will unite recyclers with manufacturers, asphalt plant operators, road pavers, DOT officials, technology providers, and more for impactful networking and cutting-edge presentations from industry experts. Learn how all stakeholders influence regulation and end markets, from asphalt pavement to closed-loop recycling, to create the ‘next wave’ of shingle recycling. Hotel booking and registration information is coming soon. For now, mark your calendar and plan to join us for a full day of actionable content. Read on for additional upcoming CDRA events.

Committee Corner
Our Committees are where all of the lifting occurs! Check out highlights from their discussions at our most recent meetings. CDRA members are encouraged to attend committee meetings to get the most out of their memberships.
Gypsum Recycling Committee During our last meeting on May 8, we viewed “live” presentations from several vendors who explained how they would provide services to the CDRA as part of our Gypsum Life Cycle Analysis project. Questions were also asked of vendors during their 15-minute slots, and all agreed that this Q&A period helped reach a final decision! Thanks to Gypsum Committee Chair Terry Weaver for leading this fast-paced meeting and to all vendor representatives and donors interested in supporting this effort! Now, the real work begins. With the Board having just approved the committee's recommendation, work will start soon on this significant project. Our next regular committee meeting is June 12. Plan to join us!
Shingle Recycling Committee – Special Presentation During our meeting on May 14 with special guest presenter Zane Hartzog, P.E. from the Alabama Department of Transportation (DOT), we discussed balanced mix design, the current levels of RAS usage by U.S. states, Department of Transportation asphalt testing details and results, and the need to formulate a win-win narrative when it comes to working with state DOTs to encourage further RAS use and much more. Don’t miss our next committee meeting, scheduled for June 11 at 4:00 pm ET. If you’re not an official committee member, contact Michael Van Kerckhove for automatic reminders for future meetings.
End Markets Committee
Our most recent meeting on May 20 featured Biochar Now’s James Gaspard and the US Biochar Institute’s Tom Miles and Myles Gray, PE. James first shared the latest updates from Biochar Now and reviewed their production process. Many of our members had the opportunity to view their Denver facility several years ago. Of course, the keys to producing this specially created carbon include not only air, fuel, and heat but an oxygen-deprived environment and high temperatures. During our most recent meeting on May 21, Membership & Marketing Director Heather Schuler shared the latest membership statistics, noting that we are less than ten members away from matching our 2023 total with much more room to grow! We continue personal outreach to former CDRA members while focusing on member recruitment during the second quarter by adding various outbound communications from CDRA and through our partner, GIE Media. Heather and Executive Director Terri Ward delivered the CDRA’s three core values of integrity and transparency, stewardship and advancement, and knowledge and collaboration to new audiences during the recent ISRI and Waste Expo show. See our Waste Expo recap in this issue! Read the full Membership & Marketing update.

Why In-Person Events Work!
A message from Heather Schuler, Membership & Marketing Director
We all cherish the unique experience of face-to-face connections, be it in our professional or personal lives. One aspect we particularly value and often discuss with our members is the power of networking. This was vividly demonstrated during our recent participation in WasteExpo and ISRI, where Terri Ward and I connected with industry peers, members, and potential members.
See you next time! Catch us at booth #850 during the Greenbuild Expo in Philadelphia, PA, November 12-15, 2024.
