Shingle Recycling Committee Corner

Thanks to committee Chair Dan Horton for always preparing so well for our meetings! After welcoming several new first-time attendees, we heard from Amlan Mukherjee, Senior Director of Sustainability and Intelligent Construction at the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA).

Amlan spoke on the basics of a Lifecycle Analysis (an LCA 101 mini-course, if you will), and how achieving a better understanding of the environment in which a product is produced, used and managed might be applied to the asphalt industry and shingles with the idea that the learnings might shine a light on the environmental benefits of RAS. A detailed look into NAPA's development of an Environmental Product Declaration was shared. An EPD is essentially a standardized document that summarizes the environmental impacts of a product based on a conducted LCA.

All of the energy and materials that can factor into the product's life were mentioned, keeping in mind that most uses of our product should be thought of as existing within the business to business environment. And in the C&D industry specifically, research into the end of life phase is quite important to the development of any LCA.

The meeting concluded with a link to the Shingle Contractor Guide found on the new shinglerecycling.org website. Thanks to a call for volunteers to help update the Find a Recycler database on the updated shinglerecycling.org website. Please contact Membership and Marketing Director Heather Schuler if you are interested in volunteering for the next round of database support. Thanks to all who have already contributed to this great-looking site!
