CDRA Members Lead Key Conversations on C&D Recycling at Waste Expo 2025

by Terri Ward, CDRA Executive Director

Waste Expo 2025 in Las Vegas earlier this month put construction and demolition (C&D) recycling in the spotlight with two dedicated sessions, showcasing the expertise and leadership of CDRA members in technology, operations, end markets, and policy.

Opening to a packed room, the first session explored advancements in recycling technology and market development, with experts sharing innovations in processing techniques, material recovery, and high-value end markets. Panelists also addressed current challenges facing processors in some regions, where slowing construction and reduced material volumes are impacting operations. Additionally, discussion highlighted how inflated recycling rate claims—often tied to large, public LEED projects—undermine real recycling efforts, damage industry credibility, and make it difficult to obtain reliable industry data. Their insights helped drive real-world solutions for greater efficiency and sustainability in C&D recycling.

While the second session had a smaller audience, it resulted in more audience participation and thoughtful questions from both private companies and public agencies attending. The session started with a great presentation from San Francisco Environment and how they’ve modified their C&D strategy after many years of experience, to prioritize certified recycling rates over self-reported rates. The following conversation emphasized how inflated recycling claims not only mislead stakeholders but also create barriers to meaningful industry progress. CDRA members reinforced the need for transparency, accurate reporting, and strong policy frameworks to ensure that legitimate recycling efforts are recognized and supported. The discussion underscored how effective regulation and truthful recycling metrics are critical to preventing misleading practices that can distort diversion efforts and undercut responsible recyclers.

I want to personally thank our members from GreenWaste, LRS, Premier Recycling, GreenWay Recycling, Viably, and San Francisco Environment for representing CDRA so well in these discussions. Your expertise not only strengthens our industry but also elevates the importance of policy-driven, effective recycling. It’s because of your leadership and collaboration that we continue to move forward in responsible and sustainable practices.

Looking forward to continuing these conversations—see you at the next event!
