CDRA Expands Member Services With New Gypsum Recycling Committee

Chicago, Illinois (January 6, 2022) – A new Gypsum Recycling Committee has been formed by the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) to help those involved in the industry grow the recovery rate for the commonly found material.

Post-consumer gypsum, largely derived from waste drywall, has been difficult to recover from the construction and demolition material stream. Over the years some companies have perfected methods to process the material into useful end products ranging from soil amendment to closing the loop into new wallboard. To support the increased interest in getting more gypsum recovered, the CDRA is teaming up with key stakeholders in gypsum recycling to move the industry forward.

The CDRA Gypsum Recycling Committee’s mission is to provide guidelines and other assistance in developing and expanding recovery and end markets for recovered gypsum. Terry Weaver, USA Gypsum, will be the first chair of the committee. The committee will be comprised of companies involved in every step of recovering drywall, including the manufacturers (and the Gypsum Association), contractors, processors, and end users to provide support for the drywall recycling industry. Initial actions will include:

  • Creating a drywall diversion policy to develop clear definitions of what types of wallboard can and should be recovered and marketed back to manufacturers of drywall with the goal of closing the loop on this construction product.
  • Developing end product specifications that recyclers have to meet to sell the recovered material back to drywall manufacturers.
  • Creating best management practices (BMPs) for contractors and processors to increase the diversion of drywall.
  • Working with drywall companies to set post-recycled content for new drywall.
  • Updating the CDRA’s current Gypsum Recycling Protocol to reflect these actions.
  • Promoting that recyclers must be third-party certified using a program developed to an ISO level so accurate diversion rates can be obtained and that drywall manufacturers would use a similar certification program to demonstrate the recycled content of their products.
  • Defining specifications for other end products made from recycled drywall.
  • Updating CDRA’s website: www.gypsumrecycling.org.

Any CDRA member can join this committee, which meets virtually for the first time on January 19. To join, contact the CDRA at [email protected].
